There are those who feel that the Congolese should not celebrate the 49th anniversary of their country's independence. They believe that the DRC has been going backward rather than moving forward. Just for this reason, there is nothing to celebrate. Do you agree?

The premise that our founding fathers used to claim Congo’s independence was the oppression of our people in our own land by the colonizers. In fact, 90% of Congo’s wealth was under the hands of about 5% of the population. Therefore, the vision of our founding father as echoed in Patrice Lumumba’s independence speech was a peaceful Congo where everybody had equal access to the privileges that once were only accessible to the whites. Well despite the brutal departure of the colonizers, Congolese people are still oppressed. This neo oppression hurts even more because it is inflicted by our own brothers and sisters. Therefore we should not celebrate this independence because our founding fathers’ wishes are yet to be realized.
I rather ask congolese people to meditate on the 49eme anniversary of a "failed" independence than ask them to celebrate. Why meditate? Because we all collectively failed those who fought and made sacrifices so that we can have a day called "30 juin".
Sadly some of our own countrymen even refuse to recognize and give credit to the very people such as Kasa-Vubu who in fact were among the very first to join the frontline of independence struggle. Very often we don't hear giving them credit. Remember Lumumba was not alone in the struggle. Please don't let our Congo become "once upon a time". Let's give credit where it is due.

It seems as if Francis and NeZinga are on the same page on this issue. This is said in different words but the overall understanding seems to recoup. It is indeed important to think about the vision of our founding fathers, those who fought heroically for independence. Some of them paid the ultimate price and other were made to retire without honor, and some more have remained anonymous. We need to meditate to find ways of realizing the wishes of our founding fathers. I call it meditation through activism and action.
